This page is to show the construction of my custom Mego Batmen and to help others learn the lessons I'm learning as I do this. I hope this will help out so you don't make the same mistakes I have. Please check back as this page is constantly under construction as I have time and money to get more supplies.
The figures I plan to make are
The early Batman (approx 1939-40's)
50's to 60's style
60' - 70's style
and the Modern Style
I have currently made the 60's version with the exception of the proper chest
logo.
Remember if you need parts see Dr. Mego
I've added a page with some great customs by Roberto, who
has solved the problem with the "oven mitts"
Click here to check out some of his work.

Here is the first figure with all his pieces. Everything is Reproduction
except the body. Don't look at the holes in the boots, the cat thought they were
toys one day. The chest logo is made from vinyl, I work in the graphics industry
and have access to a vinyl plotter to make this stuff. There should be plenty of
other places out there to get this done too.

Here is the progression of the suit, tights only, tights plus shorts, then
belt and boots and finally mask and cape. There are some better looking capes
out there especially on ebay, but I haven't gotten one yet. Also the original
Mego gloves are terrible, they look like oven mitts so I'm trying to figure out
an alternative. If anyone knows of a solution please let
me know.

I found this costume on E-bay. It is handmade and looks pretty cool. The
boots and gauntlets are the same material as the cape and shorts, but I
need to paint the hands to match the rest. The cowl is a repro from Dr. Mego and
the belt is from there also, but it will get replaced as soon as I find a better
one. Dr. Mego has a longer ear version of the cowl that I plan to get to go with
this figure along with a few other details I want to work on such as accessories
like batarangs and stuff.

Here are my base figures, as you can see I've been replacing the heads. I
think the Batman head is too cartoonish so I'm making my figures with the removable
cowl. I use Superman's head because the shape of it fits the cowl better than
the Bruce Wayne head that Mego originally used and since these are customs
anyway I'm not messing with the authenticity.

You can see the differences in the heads in this shot. Bruce's head is on
the left and Superman is on the right. The BW head has a really flat face and
doesn't really fill out the mask as well as the other head with its more
realistic shape.

These are the basic bodies that Mego used. The left one is a type 1 body and
the two on the right are type 2. The only real difference between to two
on the right is that one looks like he has his undies on.

This is the type 1 body, see the rivets used to hold it together and make
the joints. Also the body is pretty scrawny when compared to the other figure. I
really do not like this body and the only reason I have this one is because I
didn't know about the differences when I bought it.

This is the type 2 body and is much improved over the other one. If you buy
a repro body from Dr. Mego this is what you'll get.
